What a crazy year! Particularly for those of us who have moved into new jobs; whether that be through redundancy, business closure or simply because it was the right time for us to take the next step in our career.
Earlier this year I made the decision to look for a new position, and the prospect alone was utterly daunting. As I began my job search the lack of opportunities, along with the vast quantities of other candidates applying for the few positions available, was anything but encouraging. The interview process was unfamiliar and varied; ranging from telephone calls and video interviews, to socially distanced interviews. I have never had to include cleaning my dining room in my interview preparations prior to now.
Thankfully I am one of the lucky ones, I stumbled upon a listing for a Credit Control position within Telcom and was asked to attend yet another socially distanced interview however this time there was no doom and gloom, I was filled with confidence as I learnt that the telecoms industry is perhaps the most important industry to keep us moving forward as a nation in the current climate. I left the interview with the line ‘we believe that internet should be the fourth utility’ ringing in my head.
I GOT THE JOB! I guess you figured that because you are reading this blog posted on Telcom’s website **HELP ME THEY ARE HOLDING ME IN THIS INTERVIEW ROOM UNTIL I WRITE THIS BLOG…**
In all seriousness, moving to Telcom has been the best choice I have ever made. The people here embody the ‘we do things differently here’ ethos of Manchester wholeheartedly. I was immediately made welcome by the whole team and was empowered to do the role in my own way from day one with the support of my peers.
It’s hard enough changing jobs in the midst of a pandemic and a credit controller is often seen as public enemy number one as it is (especially to those who don’t pay us on time, tut tut!) and so coupled with the current economic uncertainty, it was crucial for me to strike the right balance with our customer base right away. Since I started, we have offered different financial options to support our customers affected by the pandemic which has turned most of those hard conversations into somewhat rewarding conversations.
“Thank you for your cooperation - literally the best business we have ever worked with. You’re all incredibly helpful.”
Daily Rituals
I now think of myself more of a credit helper than a credit controller. Of course my target is to recoup any money we are owed, but I hope I have shown that this can be done in the right way, we’re all going through this together after all!
This is just one of the many reasons why I’m so happy that I decided to move to Telcom. Every single employee genuinely cares about the happiness of both their peers and customers and I love how morale is always so high in the team. Everybody here is genuinely passionate about what they do, the time old saying of “there’s no ‘I’ in team” is something that is often said in the workplace, but rarely lived. At Telcom each and every person, regardless of whether something falls under their usual remit, works together to make sure our customers are getting the best service from us.
Choose a job you love and you’ll never have to work a day in your life.
